Biographical noteDebra Ann Newby was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended East Carolina University from 1975-1979 where she was a member of the women's basketball team and majored in English. Along with four other students, Newby filed a Title IX grievance with the univeristy in 1978 focused on equitability issues in the university's sports programs. After graduation, Newby attended law school at Oklahoma City University and has practiced law ever since.
